PUBLIC HOLIDAYS

A MESSAGE FROM OUR NEWLY APPOINTED COMMUNITY SAFETY OFFICER
My name is Dave Palmer and I am the newly appointed Community Safety Officer at the Whangarei District Council. My role is promoting CITY SAFE for the CBD and targeting graffiti within the Whangarei District. In this article, I will be focussing on the new CITY SAFE Call Centre, which, I encourage you to make full use of, so that you can help us make Whangarei City a safer and welcoming city in which to live and visit.

If you have a police matter, don’t hesitate to call 111 as the Police will determine the urgency and they want to know what’s happening in your area, but don’t forget to let us know as well

So, when you come across anything that concerns the safety or the desirability of people visiting the CBD, then ring our 24-hour Call Centre, on 0800 258 258, or send us an email to report@citysafe.co.nz to report your concerns or the activity that has occurred.

There are a whole raft of issues that you can assist CITY SAFE  that affects the safety of the city, such as: bikes in the mall, broken glass, damage, dishonesty, disorder, dogs, drugs, drunks, flooding, gangs, graffiti, insecure buildings, insecure cars, intimidation, lighting, liquor, noise, obstruction, offensive matter, parking, perverts, protesters, rubbish, safety, skateboarders, stray animals, traffic flow, traffic lights, vagrants, vehicles, youths, or anything else that touches the safety of the city.

No matter what your concern is, then call the Call Centre and they can assist you by either referring you to the correct agency that deals with the matter, or making  the necessary call for you depending on the type of call made. The other purpose of the Call Centre, is the collection of data that will better enable CITY SAFE in making recommendations for a safer Whangarei City to the Police, Council, government agencies and other stakeholders.

SUCCESES TO DATE:
The Call Centre is a great asset for the CBD and one of the more successful highlights of the Call Centre is the reporting of a man who was behaving suspiciously around a young girl in the Laurie Hall Carpark. This was reported by a concerned member of the public to one of the ENL Parking Wardens, who advised the CITY SAFE Call Centre, who, in turn, contacted the Police. The Police were immediate in their response and took the man away for questioning.  Further successes are the quick removal of offensive matter from a CBD Building, the enforcement of Council skateboarding bylaws within the CBD, arranging for shopping trolleys to be returned, moving on vagrants by Police and ENL enforcement,  removal of hazardous rubbish and graffiti, as well as speaking to noisy buskers.

Remember, YOU can make a difference. This service is there for you to use to create a safer CBD–so, don’t hesitate in calling the CITY SAFE Call Centre on 0800 258 258 about any unsafe behaviour or activity occurring within your city.
