Opening the door to India – opportunity knocks for Northland businesses

The proposed New Zealand–India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is all about opening doors — especially into one of the world’s fastest‑growing markets. Once in force, it would make it easier and cheaper for many New Zealand products and services to access India.

For Northland’s key production industries, the opportunities are promising. Forestry exports,  already important in the India market  would move largely tariff‑free. Horticulture producers could benefit from improved access for products like apples, kiwifruit, avocados and blueberries, while wine exports would see tariffs steadily reduced over time. Mānuka honey, a premium Northland product, would gain a major boost through significant tariff cuts, helping local producers stay competitive. There are also new pathways for dairy ingredients, supporting value‑added processing and export growth.

It’s not just goods — services benefit too. The agreement expands access for New Zealand expertise in areas like engineering, environmental services, education, digital and professional services, and makes it easier for skilled people to work across both countries.

Overall, the NZ–India FTA has the potential to create new markets, stronger export growth and long‑term opportunities for Northland businesses ready to look offshore.
